In 1905 Mary Baker Eddy began to consider establishing sanatoriums for Christian Scientists, and schools to train Christian Science nurses. In 1909 she asked the Christian Science Board of Directors to establish and maintain such a facility. By 1916 the time was right, and the Board of Directors established and commenced construction of The Christian Science Benevolent Association at Chestnut Hill in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. This was the first of what has now grown to almost 30 independent, individually incorporated Christian Science nursing care facilities operating worldwide. These facilities are not owned, controlled, or operated by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston.
Wide Horizon was originally incorporated in 1946, and began accepting its first patients in 1951, in what has now become known as the South Building. In 1990, we opened our North Building as a modern and spacious nursing facility. Horizon House, our newest building that opened in August 2000, is for those who are not presently able to live alone and need minimal though regular supervision, as well as for spirtual renewal guests.
Wide Horizon's Mission Statement
The mission of Wide Horizon is to provide Christian Science nursing,
facilities, and support for those seeking healing accomplished through complete reliance
on Christian Science as taught by Mary Baker Eddy.
