Two Christian Science Nursing courses are offered at Wide Horizon. The Basic Course is for those who are just beginning their Christian Science nursing ministry, while the Advanced Course is designed for those who wish to broaden their current practice. These courses are designed to bring out the ethical and metaphysical basis of Christian Science nursing that is needed to build and maintain a sure foundation for one's Christian Science nursing practice. They provide a balanced program of classroom instruction, study assignments from The Holy Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and practical experiences. Instructors are Journal-listed Christian Science nurses with many years of Christian Science nursing, teaching, and training experience in both home and facility settings.
In the Basic Course, beginning students will learn many of the fundamental skills needed to take proper care of the sick, including: personal care and bathing; preparation, modification, and serving of nourishment; lifting, turning and positioning of patients; assisting patients using mobility aids such as walkers and wheelchairs; ways to keep someone comfortable who spends a lot of time in a chair or in bed; aiding a patient with his or her study of Christian Science; and bringing a sweet sense of companionship to the patient.
The Advanced Course builds on the basics with the addition of many new skills, including those necessary to provide full bed care. Dressing and bandaging of wounds is introduced in this course. Emphasis is placed on simplicity and the tenderest care. Students practice how to appropriately cleanse wounds, and to apply, secure, and remove dressings. They also learn how to design dressings using suitable materials. Important concepts regarding home Christian Science nursing are considered. Students are encouraged to think through their "mission statement" for the Christian Science nursing practice and to set proper standards of care and conduct while in a patient's home. This course also covers scheduling, fee setting, record keeping, and legal issues.
