Sustainability

Years ago I found this statement of interest:

“…the most widely quoted definition of sustainability as a part of the concept sustainable development,: ‘sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’” (Brundtland Commission of the United Nations, March 20, 1987)

I surmise that the continual newness of Spirit includes the development of ideas which come from an infinite source, meeting the needs of the present, without compromise for all generations of mankind. Therefore, sustainable development when seen and practiced from a spiritual perspective can lead to meeting the needs of all generations, including all God’s creation. This is true sustainability.

Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, wrote, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 494) From a limited or clouded human perspective this statement may seem impossible, if not ridiculous. But from an enlightened spiritual perspective which wholeheartedly trusts God – divine Love or Holy Spirit – this statement can be and is proven in human experience. Thus, spiritual development which acknowledges God as a benevolent Creator strengthens and supports sustainable development in human enterprises.

A trap is that we may look at what’s going in with our respective organizations, situations, bodies and conditions, and so on, instead of serving and looking only to God, Spirit, as the Source of all good. Seeing daily that sustainability is (or supply and demand are) always balanced in and by Spirit requires yielding our personal, individual or collective material sense of things to an altitude of higher metaphysics.

As I shared last week, “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. vii). It is therefore this “sustaining infinite” or divine Love which brings true sustainability. For years I’ve felt being a servant of Spirit, not of organization, helps me see more clearly the spiritual abundance which sustains Wide Horizon. For this, I am grateful.

Abundance

In an article titled “All Sufficiency in All Things” by Elizabeth Glass Barlow, the author begins:

“Christian Science teaches that true abundance characterizes the universal, indivisible ever-presence God, good. Such abundance is spiritual…. Because of its inexhaustible nature it can be neither partitioned nor consumed. This scientific concept of abundance is of practical value today, for supply and its satisfactory distribution are challenges which face mankind.” (The Christian Science Journal, March 1951, Vol. 69, No. 3, pp. 125-127.)

It seems to me that students of Christian Science, including those who serve in Christian Science nursing organizations, can be working in and out from the present in Science, acknowledging the ever-presence of God, good. One key aspect of working in Science is to yield to the Infinite – to know divine Love and embrace the light of Christ. Then one may know abundance as a demonstrable spiritual law, ever-present, ever-active for all mankind.

Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, directs students to mentally yield to Spirit, God, allowing Love to lead. The Scriptures show this quality of yielding as paramount – in protection, provision, physical healing. This includes always turning to God, Spirit, as the Source, no matter what appears to be the circumstances. Therefore, we learn that students of Science must yield to divine Mind, God, in order to see abundance, to endure, to progress, to be healed.

At the beginning of her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy wrote, “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings” (p. vii).

To me, this statement fits perfectly with Christ Jesus’ directive, “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.” (Gospel of John 21:6)

I’ve pondered and held onto these emphatic statements (and promises) for years in my daily work at Wide Horizon. Each one has helped immensely. So, let us together, whomever and wherever you are, cast our proverbial nets on the right side of thought and action, lean on the sustaining infinite and accept that today is abundantly filled with blessings!

The New Year

Snowy Horizon Light

In his novel A Tale of Two Cities, author Charles Dickens opened with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Well, one could certainly make sound arguments that the year 2020 fits within this descriptive language in many ways. Yet, even with all the challenges, unrest, discord and hardship of 2020, hope does spring eternal. And unconditionally, divine Love does overcome and heal. Thus, Wide Horizon continues its good work of benevolent Christian Science nursing for our community and mankind. Yes, this is a season of light and love!

The discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, extemporaneously wrote the following on the morning of January 1, 1910:

I
O blessings infinite!
O glad New Year!
Sweet sign and substance
Of God’s presence here.

II
Give us not only angels’ songs,
But Science vast, to which belongs
The tongue of angels
And the song of songs.

MARY BAKER EDDY

(The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 354)

We here at Wide Horizon desire that you may feel God’s holy presence and hear Spirit’s angelic song of Science whomever and wherever you are throughout this New Year!

Spirit of Christmas

Widesnow Joy

Brian Boettiger
Brian Boettiger, CEO of Wide Horizon

May the good will and peace promised by our Lord Jesus Christ be with you today and always!

The following speaks to me of the simplicity of the spirit of Christ at Christmas: “The spirit of Christmas is joy.  The message of Christmas is hope.  The meaning of Christmas is love.”

At Wide Horizon many of the spaces are festively and colorfully decorated. Uplifting inspirational messages of joy, hope and love have been place throughout the main building. Wonderful good works are performed daily at Wide Horizon.  We pause during our active days here to give gratitude for the continual blessings we receive, including those that come to us from being in selfless service to others.

The world wouldn’t have Christian Science nursing care facilities like Wide Horizon if it were not for the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.

Mrs. Eddy practiced Christian care throughout her life. She loved and followed Christ Jesus in thought and deed.  So, I’d like to share an excerpt from one of her writings about the Christmas season.

The following is from “The Significance of Christmas” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, pp. 259 – 260):

The basis of Christmas is the rock, Christ Jesus; its fruits are inspiration and spiritual understanding of joy and rejoicing…because of fundamental and demonstrable truth, because of the heaven within us.  The basis of Christmas is love loving its enemies, returning good for evil, love that ‘suffereth long, and is kind.’  The true spirit of Christmas elevates medicine to Mind; it casts out evils, heals the sick, raises the dormant faculties, appeals to all conditions, and supplies every need of man.  It leaves hygiene, medicine, ethics, and religion to God and His Christ, to that which is the Way, in word and in deed, — the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

My wish for each of you is that you stand securely on the rock of Christ Jesus during this season of joy, hope, and love –rejoicing in the affluence of our heavenly Father-Mother God and the blessed gift of the Christ.
