The mission of Wide Horizon is to provide Christian Science nursing, facilities, and support for those seeking healing accomplished through complete reliance on Christian Science as taught by Mary Baker Eddy.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, considered establishing sanatoriums for Christian Scientists as early as 1905, along with schools to train Christian Science nurses. In 1909, Mrs. Eddy asked the Board of Directors of The Mother Church to establish and maintain such a facility. By 1916 the time was right, and the Board of Directors established and commenced construction of The Christian Science Benevolent Association at Chestnut Hill in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. This was the first of what has now grown to 28 independent, individually incorporated Christian Science nursing care facilities and/or visiting Christian Science nursing services operating worldwide. These are not owned, controlled, or operated by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston.
Wide Horizon, originally incorporated in 1947 as Mountain States Home, began accepting its first patients in January 1951. In 1990, we opened our now main building as a modern and spacious Christian Science nursing facility. Our smaller building known as Horizon House was remodeled and reopened in 1999 to serve those who need minimal supervision. In 2007 this building was beautifully redecorated for Rest and Study guests for spiritual renewal and also more independent residents.
In 2009, we launched a Building Campaign to remodel and expand the main building, which was successfully completed in July 2012.
Then in September 2015, we completed another major construction project which added three duplexes or “cottages” and a new maintenance structure on the campus. The six suites in these cottages provide temporary housing for Christian Science nurses. The original building constructed in 1950 for the sole purpose of Christian Science nursing was also razed in this project.
These improvements have enhanced opportunities for individual demonstration of Christian Science, provided a safer and more secure environment, offered more interactive activities for guests, and realized efficiencies in staffing and finances. For almost 70 years, Wide Horizon has served a multi-state region of the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. We look forward with inspired vision to see continual service unto mankind!
